FREE Education Module: One-Shot Single Scenario Dungeon Project

Written by on November 20, 2020

Open source writing module for teachers and parents

Free educational tool for improving writing skills and reading comprehension for grades 6-12.

Students will develop and write their very own RPG adventure using the included Brains and Brawn system guide as though they are responding to a proposal request from a gaming company. Goblins and Growlers developed this module in partnership with a tenth grade English class as part of their project to create a set of playable, inclusive role-playing games designed to improve youth reading skills and to help close the educational gap in our communities. We are all very happy to share the resulting module with parents, teachers, and students alike.

The module includes a set of templates and guidelines as well as instructional videos created by the game designers and artists at Goblins and Growlers.

How to complete this project with your students:

Provide project details to your students through the Request for Proposal document and optional video Project Proposal: How to Write an RPG. Review the rules of gameplay through the Mechanics Guide: Brains and Brawn to get an idea of the rules of the game system that the students will be writing within.

Instructors may choose to run a test game with students using the Sample Game: Valdri’s Toy Store. Students can also compare the sample adventure to how it translates to gameplay by watching the video Gameplay Demo: Valdri’s Toy Store. Use the Writer’s Template to develop the checkpoint products your class requires to complete the finished product. Three additional instructional videos on GMing and Creative Storytelling, Writing Encounters and Puzzles, and Concept Art and Illustration for RPGs are also included to help guide students through the creative writing process. Instructors can also choose to provide feedback throughout the project as though they are representing the gaming company. (Optional assignments can also be built into the project to fit additional learning objectives; such as writing a professional email submission, giving a concept art presentation, developing a game marketing proposal, etc.).

The project as outlined in the provided documents will help your students develop the following:

  • An engaging RPG scenario with a storyline that can be played in under two hours
  • Four pre-generated characters
  • Two to three encounters and/or puzzles that focus on improving age-appropriate reading skills
  • Art and visuals that compliment or describe the story, characters, and/or activities within the scenario
